Minor comment/nitpick about the above .gitignore lines: they seem to be
overly generic. There are legitimate debian/python{,3}-debian.* stuff
that is not automatically generated and that we will want to have in
Git.

I propose instead:

  +debian/*.debhelper.log
  +debian/*.debhelper
  +debian/*.substvars
  +debian/python-debian/
  +debian/python3-debian/
