In  roundcube-core.config, I  use "db_get  roundcube/language"  to query
previous choice or  preseeding. The locale is then  checked if it exists
and is used as is, if this is the case.

Since you  got en_US instead,  this means there  was a problem.   If you
reconfigure  roundcube-core  with  frontend  set to  noninteractive  and
priority to critical,  does your current locale is  preserved?  The path
for  preseeding  and   keeping  the  current  choice  is   the  same  in
