Patching operating system

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

reset the debian database config to the remote mysql server's IP after the patching wiped this.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

roundcube now works.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

That the locally set config is not altered on patching but local config is honoured.
