The width is set to a font size related value which scales the text to
an agreeable width for reading.  It is a general misconception that it
is best that text should span the full width, it makes it harder to
read.  Overmore, the text width now 45em is even larger than the optimum
30em.  I have some research references if you want to read more about it. ;)
