I'm not sure if the way you currently deal with it (private repository
with gems you converted to deb) is the best way, even if it's a good
demonstration that the approach work.

Maybe it would be better to advertise gemsd as something users could use
to convert their gems to debs on their own system, like people do with
rpm using alien.
