Additional info trying a second round:

MySQL was reinstalled immediately before trying to install/configure redmine.
This is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

  Sorry if duplicate, but did not find the following in the two existin
  reports:

  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
  A package failed to install.  Trying to recover:
