I've committed the d/control changes to git, but with MariaDB there
are failing tests:

  1) Sphinx Updates should update a single record appropriately
     Failure/Error: ellie[:attributes]["birthday"].should == Time.local(1970, 1, 23).to_i

       expected: 1900800
            got: 191203200 (using ==)
     # ./spec/functional/update_spec.rb:14:in `block (2 levels) in <top (required)>'

Looks like MariaDB is not really that compatible or something.
