I concur with Viktor's assessment. I just tried to install 8.4.3+dfsg-1 on a
Debian unstable system using systemd and got during installation:

fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
mkdir -p /var/lib/gitlab/repositories/: OK
mkdir -p /usr/share/gitlab/.ssh: OK
chmod 700 /usr/share/gitlab/.ssh: OK
touch /usr/share/gitlab/.ssh/authorized_keys: OK
chmod 600 /usr/share/gitlab/.ssh/authorized_keys: OK
chmod ug+rwX,o-rwx /var/lib/gitlab/repositories/: OK
Precompiling assets...
fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
Job for gitlab.service failed. See 'systemctl status gitlab.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
invoke-rc.d: initscript gitlab, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package gitlab (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
