this executable does not come from the Debian package, which installs it
under /usr/bin instead (as can be checked by `dpkg -L asciidoctor`).

same here: the libraries from ruby-asciidoctor are under
/usr/lib/ruby/vendor_ruby.

Could it be possible that you installed a version of asciidoctor from a
Ruby gem system wide?

If it is the case, you have to get rid of it to be able to use the
Debian package. Please try. If it works again, we can close the bug,
otherwise, I will be happy to help you to hunt the issue deeper.
