Yeah, you are right, this was completely unrelated.

I had tried to remove the google-protobuf and grpc gems that needed to 
be installed manually previously. Apparently, I was slightly too 
agressive. After restoring /var/lib/gems that I had moved away, the 
installation finished successfully.
