Thanks for your report. This seems to actually be a regression in libgit2 (as packaged in Debian) - downgrading to http://snapshot.debian.org/package/libgit2/1.8.2~rc1%2Bds2-1/#libgit2-1.8_1.8.2:7e:rc1:2b:ds2-1 makes the problem go away for me.

Merging with the already filed bug on the libgit2 side accordingly - I'll see about adding autopkgtests to rustc/cargo to catch such issues faster in the future!
