found it - there was a unrelated hasher.finalize() that shoudn't have 
been changed, its building now, thanks.

nevertheless, it would still be nice to be able to drop the patch later 
on and use rust-md5 >= 0.8 properly. if you need help with that, I'm 
happy to lend a hand.
