Similarly, I tried in a fresh stretch environment and it works fine.
The toolchain there is ld 2.25.90.20151209 and gcc 5.3.1-3.

I think we are going to close this as it doesn't affect proper/fresh setups, 
but still it would be nice to know which mix of compilers/linker/runtime is 
causing this. Do you also have LLVM somewhere in your pipeline?
