Hi Willem, I'm adding our public mailing list as well as some other relevant people.

rustc in Debian itself is stable yes, and people are welcome to start depending on it. I think we are doing a decent job of keeping it up-to-date, and I personally recently got access to a high-powered build machine that makes this job much easier.

However, there is also cargo and cargo packaging policy - I am guessing that you will need these too. I myself only have the time (just about) to properly maintain rustc. 

Luca has been the one taking care of cargo, and I think he would definitely appreciate help with it. Also we haven't yet specified a policy on how cargo packages should translate into Debian packages. Luca and Josh had been discussing that a few months ago, but I don't know what the current progress is nor what the remaining issues are.
