I appreciate your concern very well, but the reason new build tools are 
introduced is so you use them, and not only two years from now.

There is a backport of debhelper at backports.org.  If you're into 
backporting at all, using that is easy.  It's not like this is a new 
library that introduces new run-time dependencies or some other mess.
