I experienced the same problem that the fs was mounted as root although
smbmount was called as user. I noted also that I could make changes to
the files being on the mounted fs, although they were r-x for group and
world... I could however not make files or directories.
The fileserver here is Windows 2003 server, but I have no further
control over it since I'm only a user.
