Seconded. 

I personnally consider that our duty, as Debian maintainers, is to
make our package as close to upstream as possible. So, the Right Way
to get your patch included is to talk to upstream as you did
first. Apparently, your first proposal did not get immediate attention
but please consider that the Samba Team is a pretty small team and
that this is holidays season for most of them also.
