[Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#423780: #423780 /usr/sbin/smbd: does not log warning when login is tried with non-existent users

Hello Marc,

I checked the logging and tested it the following way (Debian lenny with samba 3.0.25a-1):

$ smbclient -U nouser //localhost/tmp
Password:
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE

The user "nouser" does not exists. Like you I set the log level to 5.

In /var/log/samba/log.CLIENTMACHINENAME (in my case ibook)
...

  check_ntlm_password:  Checking password for unmapped user [WORKGROUP]\[nouser]@[IBOOK] with the new password interface

  check_sam_security: Couldn't find user 'nouser' in passdb.
[2007/06/20 01:14:01, 5] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(273)
  check_ntlm_password: sam authentication for user [nouser] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
[2007/06/20 01:14:01, 2] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(319)
  check_ntlm_password:  Authentication for user [nouser] -> [nouser] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
...

So you see the error "Couldn't find user 'nouser' in passdb." is what
you are looking for, right?
