Quoting Steve Langasek (vorlon at debian.org):

Hmmm, please don't misunderstand my words. They don't intentionnally
fork our packages.

Actually they are providing locally built .deb packages to their
customers with the intent of these packages to be easier to supprot
for them, ie closer to upstream than ours.

They also provide backported packages (for etch, for instance) so that
their customers can run them on their server and get Sernet's support.

At least this is my udnerstanding. Michael Adam will correct me if I'm
telling wrong things..(and if he reads this).

There are not that many changes in their packages, indeed. They even
take care to name them "sernet-*" to avoid confusion with "official"
Debian packages.

Still, we have a few interesting things to pick and they have many
recently changes things to pick.....which is the point of the hours I
spent on these packages.

The main point, imho, is to establish this collaboration so that
improvements they make in their packages make their way into ours and
vice-versa.

At the moment, they picked up our packages in the very distant past
and never re-merged with us....which is what we could IMHO
improve. Indeed about the same way we're currently doing that between
Debian and Ubuntu packages....leading to a win-win situation.

That could even become a good argument to switch our packaging to git
and have their packages to be a branch of ours or so....but I leave
this to the people who really understand git, indeed.
