No; I think the right fix is to refactor how these various sub-libraries are
being built and grouped, to reduce the excess linkage in the first place.

Cross that bridge when we come to it :)  But first, we may want to take the
smbspool patch, which fixes a regression in 3.2.0 relative to 3.0.x, now
that this patch is (somewhat) confirmed by upstream.
