Since upstream was never able to reproduce the bug, I guess not. :)

Correct, this is a workaround for an arm compiler bug.  The permanent fix
needs to be made to gcc, not to samba.

Would be great if someone had time to upload 3.0.28-2 to the archive,
though; I'm pretty tapped out for the next few days, and I hate for the arm
users to be left waiting for this fix longer now that it's available.
