For the heck of it, I also tried the current Sidux kernel. It responds the 
same way. It is clearly some interaction between Samba and the kernel, but it 
looks like a wide variety of kernels are affected. The machine in question 
uses a 2 Gig, Celeron processor with an Intel 965 chipset.
