I installed an experimental kernel from Sidux (2.6.24-rc8-git4-slh-smp-1) and 
can confirm that the nasty kernel interaction with more than one CIFS mount 
goes away. I don't much like running with an experimental kernel outside of 
my native distro, but I'll run it for a while and see how it goes.
