I'm not able to reproduce this error.  What do you get if you try to connect
to this server with the smbclient from the same version of samba?

It's also more likely, with cifs, that any mount problems are kernel
problems rather than problems with the smbfs package.  Are you running the
Debian kernel from unstable in both cases?
