By trial and error, I isolated that this comes from:

.de1 SH
.\" put an extra blank line of space above the head in non-TTY output
     .../...
.nr an-break-flag 1
\." make the size of the head bigger
.ps +3
     .../...


Removing the lines starting with .\" makes the error vanish. Don't ask
me why...:-)

Indeed, the manpages apparently redefine .SH ("level-one heading that
works better for non-TTY output"). This is very probably coming from
the XML->man tools used by the Samba Team....
