Note that I'm not actually asking for setuid to be restored, just pointing out that the documentation says that mount.cifs will respect the "user" flag in /etc/fstab, but at least on my system it does not. (It could be that the internals of respecting the user flag require setuid -- I admit ignorance of the details) James
