Hello Sam. Thanks for your clear analysis on this.

Sure, I remember this. IIRC, we even had an old bug report in samba
for this. We probably need to check how it got fixed and deal about
this with upstream samba.

Added to my TODO pile, but I would appreciate technical help from
Steve Langasek and/or you. Moreover, I won't be able to deal with this
until next next at minimum.
