IIRC, we trimmed the smb.conf quite significantly over the years, but
I agree it should be kept as short as possible.

Ideally, indeed, it could even be better if we could have.....an empty
smb.conf file (therefore only using upstream defaults). But I seem to
remember that samba fails to start when there is no (or an empty)
smb.conf. IIRC, I filed a bug about this in Bugzilla.
