You're not specifying a workgroup for the user, and the default
workgroup seems to be different in the two smb.conf files:

From the working smb.conf:
doing parameter workgroup = MYGROUP

From the broken one:

doing parameter workgroup = someurl

Can you try authenticating with -UMYGROUP\\backup ?
