/usr/lib/<three-tuple>/ctdb seems practical without extra patching.

I've still not worked this part out, I'll need help.

I've pushed a new set of talloc and samba packages to my git repo, and
confirmed that the patched 4.3.6 works with the new talloc 2.1.6 (but I
don't plan to let that out of experimental quite yet).

Do I need to file a debian bug for the Samba < 4.4.0 / talloc 2.1.6
issue?

If I could get a hand getting these into the official repo in an
acceptable way (eg with upstream tags done right), that would be most
helpful.

Thanks,

Andrew Bartlett
