Like the other(s), a purge and reinstall didn't allow the service to set up properly. What I did was back up my /etc/samba directory, then copy /etc/samba/smb.conf.ucf-dist to /etc/samba/smb.conf, and then copy my customizations to the file from my original smb.conf, including my share definitions, etc.  I have no idea if this is safe or sane, but it allowed samba to set up and run.
