$ uname -a

At the time, I tried 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, and 3.

If I remember correctly, 1.0 gave me a different error message, but
still failed to mount.  3.0 (I think) and 3 gave the error above.  I
don't remember which error I got for 2.[01], but it was one of the two.

If it would be useful, early next week I can try temporarily upgrading
samba on the server and running mount on the client with the --verbose
option.  If there is anything else I should try at that time, let me
know.

If it makes any difference (I don't think so), the version of samba on
my client is 2:4.11.1+dfsg-2, and  mount.cifs works correctly with the
older version of samba on the server.
