OK to close, thanks. Apologies for not following up.

I gave up on trying to set up Samba as an AD-DC. For a while I used it
as a member server joined to a domain, but then that stopped working,
surely due to changes in the upstream DC servers. Now I use Samba as a
standalone server (with old-fashioned smbpasswd), and all is well.
