I just wanted to point out that this was really a bug in dpkg-dev:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1076863

so in case you would like to continue to use some of
those variables in debian/rules (or undo the workaround),
you would be in your right to do so.
