I assume the part you agree on is continued maintenance over short-term
"concluded" efforts.
I suggest you consider changing your email writing style from TOFU to
interleaved, to reduce the risk of misunderstanding - and (arguably!)

I highly suspect that error is unrelated to introducing gbp.conf: Try
remove the file and see if the error persist.
More likely the tarball you have now is different from the tarball you
imported earlier: Try (in another directory) download upstream tarball
again and check them both e.g. with sha256sum. If they are don't match
then try use the freshly downloaded tarball instead. If they match then
it is the imported tarball that was not pristine, and you really should
re-import!
