Bug#501831: Still not available

Some more information, as I tried compiling from source code.
I fetched with
* apt-get source libsdl1.2debian-all
applied patches with
* QUILT_PATCHES=debian/patches quit push -a
ran configure with what I believe to be options for the ...-all package:
* ./configure --disable-rpath --enable-dlopen --enable-dependency-tracking
--enable-arts-shared=no --enable-alsa-shared=no --enable-arts-shared=no
--enable-esd-shared=no --enable-pulseaudio-shared=no --disable-video-ggi
--enable-video-aalib --enable-video-directfb --enable-video-caca
compiled and installed
* make ; make install
preloaded the /usr/local copy of the shared lib:
* LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0 SDL_VIDEODRIVER=caca tmw

(Lines above were type-copied (writing from a different machine) so excuse
me for any mistakes.)

What surprised me is that the above worked! Could it be that the binary
package currently in Debian is accidentally built with different options?

Could the fix make it there in time for lenny?
