Package: exim4
Version: 4.30-5

Hello,

Trying to install exim4 version 4.30-5 on my Debian Alpha machine,
running unstable, I get the following error (from either apt-get
--configure --pending or dselect):

<------------------ snip ------------------>
Setting up exim4-config (4.30-5) ...
Adding system-user for exim (v4)
dpkg: error processing exim4-config (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of exim4-base:
 exim4-base depends on exim4-config (>= 4.30) | exim4-config-2;
however:
  Package exim4-config is not configured yet.
  Package exim4-config-2 is not installed.
  Package exim4-config which provides exim4-config-2 is not configured
yet.
dpkg: error processing exim4-base (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of exim4-daemon-light:
 exim4-daemon-light depends on exim4-base (>= 4.30); however:
  Package exim4-base is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing exim4-daemon-light (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
<------------------ snip ------------------>

I have seen other bugs on the exim4 package that pointed to an old
version of the passwd package as the cause, but I have the following
versions of the passwd and adduser packages:

passwd   1:4.0.3-17
adduser  3.51

which are the latest (I keep my system pretty much up to date all the
time). Although I have seen messages when installing packages, saying
they could not create a certain group or user. One recent example was
this:

<------------------ snip ------------------>
Setting up cupsys (1.1.20final-15) ...
Adding group lpadmin (111)...
addgroup: `/usr/sbin/groupadd -g 111 lpadmin' exited from signal 13.
Aborting.
<------------------ snip ------------------>

but for some reason, after rebooting, the package installed correctly.
Not the case for exim4, whose install still dies with the error stated
above.

Is this a bug in adduser/passwd, or in the exim4 package?

(note: I have been trying to send mails to the debian-user mailing list
for 4 days now, to try and get peoples suggestions on this problem, but
my mails don't get through to the list. That's why I thought of
reporting here to see what you would say.)

Thanks in advance,
