I think that's OK, but you'll have to keep the "--des" and "--md5"
command line switches for backward compatibility.
Maybe get utilities print some warning message when they are
used. Something like:
$ echo tintin:tintin | chpasswd --des
WARNING: the --des command line switch is obsolete. Please use
"--crypt des" instead.
$
(and doing the work anyway...)
