First of all, Alexander is neither Russian nor
Ukrainian spelling (and name too -- it's Greek) ;)

Russian native spelling is Alexandr/Aleksandr,
Ukrainian native spelling (it also has different
pronunciation) is Olexandr.
// Tatarian/Turk is Iskander...

Russian nick for Alexandr is Sasha (resembles
Sancho in Spanish, doesn't it?),
Ukrainian nick for Olexandr is Sashko

Alex is often used as nick for the name too (and it's
shorter), so you didn't actually mistake. :)
