root at mykerinos:~/src/debian/shadow# LC_ALL=C chage tintin
Changing the aging information for tintin
Enter the new value, or press ENTER for the default

        Minimum Password Age [0]:
        Maximum Password Age [99999]:
        Last Password Change (YYYY-MM-DD) [2005-07-23]:
        Password Expiration Warning [7]:
        Password Inactive [-1]:
        Account Expiration Date (YYYY-MM-DD) [1969-12-31]:
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
root at mykerinos:~/src/debian/shadow#

THe "Enter new UNIX password" prompt actually changes.....the root
password!

What the hell is happening?

My /etc/pam.d/chage file:

# The PAM configuration file for the Shadow 'chage' service
#

# This allows root to su without passwords (normal operation)
auth sufficient	pam_rootok.so

(other modules used by Tomasz in the example file do not seem
appropriate, imho...and certainly not related to this)
