This bug was finally and logically reassigned to the passwd package as
"groupadd" belong to it (while addgroup belongs to the adduser
package).

It seems, from the bug log, that Marc Haber repeatedly asked the passwd
package maintainer to give an answer about it, unsuccessfully.

Neither groupadd nor useradd support the --force-badname option, so
I'm wondering about simply closing this bug report. What prevents me
to do so is that the bug submitter mentioned this behaviour while using
the adduser utility.

So "adduser --group" then calls groupadd and not addgroup. *that* sound
strange to me....

PS to Marc and adduser maintainers=A0: for post-sarge, we should
probably talk together (I'm in the process of taking over shadow, the
source package for passwd and login, which include useradd and
groupadd). Having both a "useradd" and a "adduser" utility in Debian
seems very confusing to our users. Even me is usually forced to
remember which is which.

We should probably consider some day declaring useradd and groupadd
obsoleted by adduser and addgroup which have far more features.
