Details about utmp are avalaible in utmp(5).
utmp is old style just logged users database. utmpx is new one (IIRC was=20
introduced in glibc 2.x). Both files usualy are located in /var/run. On=20
glibc level if utmp records are managed using UTMPX API if utmpx file=20
will be not found it tries access and manage just logged users records in=
=20
old utmp file.

If UTMPX API is avalaible better use this instead old UTMP
so seems patch is good (and for commit ASAP).
