I have also hit ftape :) and u386mon (with a nice :)
passage about Xenix:
  http://groups.google.com.ua/groups?q=HZ+environment+variable&hl=uk&lr=&group=comp.*&selm=407%40n4hgf.Mt-Park.GA.US&rnum=3

I have a problem with my ISP's handling of NNTP -- seems
that my posts don't reach comp.* ...

In summary, we should state that "HZ as ennvar is a
_relic_ (of prof, times, ftape, Pcomm, u386mon and
alike?), and currently no program depends on it, but if
you find a one, please file bugreport against it." ;)
