Well, I think that one way or another we will use PO as the end format
for documentation. Tomasz will certainly make changes upstream in the
way the documentation will be handled, but in any way, I'll make my
best to push PO as the format to be used by translators. The remaining
magic will be done by yet-to-be-defined tools (see discussion between
Tomasz and Martin....in which I'm sometimes lost).

So, my feeling is that having the material available as PO files will
certainly help the transition.
