lalonde:~# EDITOR=true vipw

vipw: /etc/passwd is unchanged
lalonde:~# EDITOR=true vipw >/dev/null

vipw: /etc/passwd is unchanged
lalonde:~#

I don't know how long vipw has been doing this, but it certainly
hasn't always at least on Debian. I appreciate that people may want
to be UI-compatible with other platforms', but it would be good if

(a) this behaviour was at least configurable somehow, maybe with a
command-line option, and

(b) it went to stdout, not stderr.

The reason I want this is that vipw is pretty much the only portable
way of editing the password file with locking, and I have a program
which uses vipw with a special EDITOR and runs out of cron. But now
vipw is wittering at me each day and I can't stop it.

Ian.
