Below is what I finally propose to document the nearly obsolete HZ
variable:

# HZ as an envrionment variable is a
# _relic_ (of prof, times, ftape, Pcomm, u386mon and
# alike?), and currently no program depends on it. If
# you find a one, please file a bug report against it, not
# against shadow
#
# Defines, with a numerical value, the number of
# clock interrupts per second.  The value of this
# variable is dependent on the hardware.

# It has NO default value
