(spinnoff from #248150)
login.defs has a USERGROUPS_ENAB option, but in login.c (line
1256), the call to setup_limits (which deals with USERGROUPS_ENAB) is inside
an #ifndef USE_PAM. Ok, so we're using PAM now. But the comments in
login.defs don't say so. :( login.defs(5) wrongly says that login(1) no
longer uses login.defs. TTY mode setting is still controlled by login.defs,
for one thing.
At the very least, the docs should say what's going on so it doesn't take
so long for people to figure it out. It would be nice if the functionality
of USERGROUPS_ENAB was available somewhere (maybe in PAM, but that would be
a separate wishlist bug I guess.) Maybe the USERGROUPS_ENAB functionality
should be re-written in shell in /etc/profile, along with setting the
default there.
OTOH why not take setup_limits out of
#ifndef USE_PAM and handle all the login stuff in
login.defs. That would allow totally removing the umask line form
/etc/profile? #248140
According to #248150 the umask did not work unless
equal lines existed in both login.defs and profile,
though. Strange behaviour.
