Marc, last shadow release (1:4.0.14-3) includes this
patch. It should give us more clue about what really
happens.
The patch adds SYSLOG statements, most interesting is:
SYSLOG ((LOG_WARN, "`%s'.st_rdev(%u,%u) != stdin.st_rdev(%u,%u)\n",
tty, major(by_name.st_rdev), minor(by_name.st_rdev),
major(by_fd.st_rdev), minor(by_fd.st_rdev)));
Thus you'll be able to see what sort of device is
login's stdin and its record in utmp...
