Package: login
Version: 1:4.0.16-2
Severity: normal

For the last several testing versions,
if /etc/login.defs contains "MD5_CRYPT_ENAB yes",
this will cause errors from addgrp, adduser, passwd, su, and the like.

   Adding group `ymsp' (1038)...
configuration error - unknown item 'MD5_CRYPT_ENAB' (notify administrator)

   Message from syslogd at ns1 at Mon Jul 10 14:39:59 2006 ...
   ns1 groupadd[24720]: unknown configuration item `MD5_CRYPT_ENAB'
   Done.

and

   ns1 su[13078]: unknown configuration item `MD5_CRYPT_ENAB'

>From what I understand, this is only actually important if I were for some reason not using PAM.
In the past, debian archive lists said this was supposed to be OK and enabled.
I've not been able to find documentation of this being compiled out of the default build.

I recommend one of:
Move this to the obsoleted section
Update comments to indicate it's not available in default Debian build
   Reinclide this in the build
Some other option I didn't think of.

If I'm missing something, please let me know. I haven't fully ruled out error on my part.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,
Josh Davis
