[Pkg-shadow-devel] Reviving the maintenance of shadow?

This mail is CC'ed to the mailing list of Debian shadow package
maintainers and a few contributors whose name I've been able to find
or remember having seen in the shadow package mailing list.

As most of you have noticed, the CVS of shadow, maintained by Tomasz
Kloczko, is unreachable since about March 2007. Last changes to the
CVS are dated back 2/2/2007.

The latest release of shadow is dated back August 2006.

Except for a few very brief contacts by Nicolas François on #shadow on
irc.freenode.net, we haven't heard from Tomasz for a while.

Nicolas François and myself, as main Debian package maintainers, are
worried about this situation and we think this is probably similar for
maintainers of other Linux distributions.

We would like to propose you people to think about possible actions we
could take together to continue the maintenance of shadow upstream.

As of now, the list of the Debian package maintainers is opened to
everybody wanting to take part to the revival of shadow, or at least
to the interim maintenance while Toasz is dealing with issues that
prevent him to work on his FLOSS activities.

We invite you to join us on the "pkg-shadow-devel" mailing list on
lists.alioth.debian.org to discuss this issue. Please also remember
about the #shadow channel on freenode. I'm connected there all time
long as "bubulle". Tomasz is still connected as "kloczek".

Please do not misunderstood us: this is not a hijack or fork of shadow
by Evil Debian Maintainers...:-). We mostly want to find a solution
which could only be temporary to the current problem we all
have. Debian can of course host the resources for the maintenance
project but we certainly do *not* want to steal anybody's work..or
fork it.

Feel free to share your thoughts about this proposal. You can CC the
pkg-shadow-devel mailing list as it has an opened posting policy (yes,
that may mean spam...but we might setup another mailing list if we
agree for some kind of co-maintenance).
